Alternate Universe (AU) Fanfic Generator

This AU fanfic generator keeps your characters and moves them into a different world: a coffee shop, a modern city, a fantasy kingdom, a space station. Pick an alternate universe from the menu or describe your own. It is the same fanfic generator as the home page, preset to a coffee shop AU, with a guide to each type below.

PG-13 is the default. T (Teen, 13+) allows mild language, non-graphic fights and heavier angst. Neither has sexual or NSFW content, and romance stays at hand-holding and hugs.

Leave everything empty and the button reads Surprise me: it fills the form with a random original idea for you to check, then you press Generate.

Rated PG-13 by default, or T (Teen) if you pick it; never NSFW. By generating you agree to the content policy and the acceptable use rules; blocked requests are not counted or charged. 3 free fics a day, no sign-up, reset at midnight UTC+8.

Your fic will appear on this page.

Popular alternate universe types

Coffee shop AU
Everyone works at, owns or haunts a café. Low stakes, lots of banter, a regular customer with a strange order. The most popular cozy AU for a reason.
Modern AU
Characters from a historical or fantasy world live ordinary present-day lives: flatmates, phones, group chats, late buses. Fun for seeing how a sword-swinging hero handles a self-checkout.
Fantasy AU
Ordinary characters get swords, spells, dragons or a quest. Decide what each character's role would be in a fantasy world: who is the healer, who is the reluctant hero.
Space AU
A ship, a station or a new planet. Crew roles map nicely onto character dynamics, and isolation gives a story pressure.
School and office AUs
Put everyone in the same school or the same workplace. Deadlines, group projects and an annoying manager do a lot of plot work for you.
Small-town and post-apocalyptic AUs
A town where everyone knows everyone, or a quiet world after a big collapse where people rebuild. Both reward found-family stories; the generator keeps post-apocalyptic stories hopeful and non-graphic.

Keeping characters recognisable in a new world

An AU works when the world changes and the characters do not. Before you generate, write down the two or three things that make each character themselves: a temper, a loyalty, a fear, a way of speaking. Then let the AU change jobs, clothes, technology and scenery around them.

A useful test is to ask what each character would do on their first day in the new world. A careful planner opens a café with a spreadsheet; a reckless one opens it with no coffee beans. Put that answer in your setup, and the AU fanfic generator will build the story around it.

Example results

An example written for this page with original characters, showing a fantasy pair moved into a coffee shop AU. Your stories will differ.

Setup: Coffee shop AU. Brann, a retired knight who still salutes everyone, and Ilsa, a sorceress who hates mornings, run a café together. Funny, third person, happy ending.

Brann saluted the first customer of the day. He saluted the second one too, and the delivery driver, and the pigeon on the windowsill.

"You cannot salute the pigeon," Ilsa said from behind the espresso machine, which was hissing in a way that suggested she had enchanted it again.

"He comes every morning. That is loyalty."

"He comes every morning because you feed him croissants." She slid a cup across the counter. The foam on top was shaped like a small, perfect shield. Brann looked at it, then at her. Ilsa shrugged. "It's early. Don't make it weird."

Mixing tropes with an AU

Tropes and alternate universes stack well. A coffee shop AU with mistaken identity, a space AU with a time loop, a fantasy AU with rivals to friends: choose a universe and a trope from the menus and add one sentence about the problem. Keep the combination simple for short stories, and save the bigger mash-ups for a long story with a pack. Every universe follows the same content policy, so an AU never changes the rating rules (PG-13 by default, optional T, never NSFW).

AU fanfic generator FAQ

What is an AU fanfic?

AU stands for alternate universe. An AU fanfic keeps the characters but changes the world around them, such as moving a band of adventurers into a modern coffee shop or a space station.

Which AU types can the AU fanfic generator write?

Coffee shop, modern, fantasy, space, school, office, small-town and post-apocalyptic AUs are in the menu, and you can describe any other setting in the setup box.

How do I keep the characters recognisable in a new world?

Write down the two or three traits that make each character who they are, then let the world change everything else. A stubborn knight stays stubborn as a barista; only the job changes.

Can I mix two AUs?

Yes. Name both in the setup, such as a fantasy AU where the inn is run like a modern coffee chain. Keep the mix simple so the story has room to move.

Are AU stories PG-13 too?

Yes, PG-13 by default, or T if you pick it. The same content rules apply in every universe: no sexual content, no real people, light romance only between adults, and no romance for characters under 18.
